This year’s 17th National Basic Schools Circuit & Cultural Festival was held on Tuesday, 4th July, 2023 at Obodan Presby Park of Akuapim South with performers drawn from schools in the municipality. The theme for the festival was ‘The Relevance of Culture Education to the Ghanaian Economy’.
In attendance were Ms. Lydia Akueteh (MCD), officers from Akuapim South Education Directorate, Mr. Michael Agyapong (Kwahu East Cultural Coordinator), Mrs. Joyce Asiedu (Municipal Culture Coordinator), Mrs. Matilda Quianoo (Former Cultural Coordinator), Mr. Jonathan Ntow (Eastern Regional Cultural Coordinator) and Mr. Akuffo Lartey (Past Nsawam Adoagyiri Cultural Coordinator) head teachers and teachers.
Mrs. Elizabeth Afriyie, the Municipal Education Director gave the welcome address emphasizing on the importance of culture to the society, the need to identify and hone the talent of our children. She also pointed out that culture could be displayed in the form of festival, customs, arts etc which eventually enhances our values and norms. With regards to the arts, she reiterated that, it could rake in income in the form of foreign exchange and taxes to the government for development.
The purpose of the gathering was given by Mrs. Joyce Asiedu. She stated that, the event was to select the best school or performer(s) for the zonal, regional and eventually the national event and all should put in their best to be rewarded with selection.
The adjudicators awarded marks in the various categories which included Talent Hunt, Sight Singing, Poetry Performance, Drum Language, Choral Music, Drama in English Language, Ampe and Traditional Dance.
Some students also displayed their talent through art, cooking, bead making, construction and assembling etc…
